Mix food color and cocoa and set aside. Preheat oven to 325. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and color, beat well. Add vanilla, mix. Add buttermilk, flour and salt a little at a time using mixer. Mix vinegar and baking soda in a cup and add to cake, beating by hand. Bake in 2 9-inch pans for 30-35 minutes.
